So, I just recently moved out to the west coast from the east coast. A friend encouraged me to start a blog so that friends and family could easily check up on what I was up to. Shortly afterward, my brother encouraged me to get an account on twitter which has been referred to as
micro-blogging. So I decided to do both. I encourage all of you out there to also get on to twitter as well, so I can follow the small little events in your life. I really want to dive head first into it to see if I like it, and quite frankly just keeping track of one person isn't going to keep me going back.
So, the real reason for this post is to try and rationalize the name of the blog. When I created an account, the first question the site asked me was to enter a name. I hadn't given it much thought and instantly thought about including the words "rant" or "musings" or something like that in the title. But every single thing I could think of using those or similar words was taken! I guess that shouldn't come as a surprise, but it's still annoying.
So I decided to head to the thesaurus to find a word I don't know (given my vocabulary has about 12 words in it, I figured this wouldn't be too difficult). After a bit of searching, I found "excogitation". Here's the definition from
Webster's dictionary:
I figured that sounded like what I do on the blog, so that part was set. The "alley" part then seemed to flow naturally. In retrospect, I think I was subtly influenced by the name of a friend's blog which also sounds like a place you might visit in the real world (rather than on the Internet). So, that's it. That's how I arrived at the name.
